    Song Meaning

The song was inspired by LeeSsang's commercial success which they only started enjoying after Kang Gary joined Running Man. It is exactly what the title says it is, their journey towards happiness. It is their attempt to share to their fans the things they go through as they create music that mirrors their journey towards success, lots of difficulties but always worth it.

    Looking Down from Above

LeeSsang experienced critical success after almost a decade since pursuing music through their first album titled LeeSsang from Honey Family. They were also already a commercial success. However, given that Hip Hop is a niche market, commercial success to LeeSsang was nowhere near the mainstream success they are experiencing now.

Gary famously said that a lot of people knew their music but very few knew their faces. They didn't get a lot of invitations to appear on TV and was doing a lot of live shows in order to keep themselves relevant.

Kang Gary's decision to join Running Man proved to be a game changer for LeeSsang. Their popularity went through the roof and their businesses became a commercial success too.

After Kang Gary woke up to the email of his manager containing a screenshot of all of the songs in their albums occupying positions one to 10 in the charts, it made Kang Gary realized that they are exactly where they wanted to be when they started making music, a respected and commercially successful musician.

The difficulties paid off. The miseries are worth it.

This song is when they finally reached the top and they see the difficult path they had to travel to get there.

    Things the Song Revealed

"So all the things I sacrificed can put on a smile"

This is an allusion to the things he sacrificed in order to pursue music. Kang Gary and Gil openly talked about sacrificing relationships (not just romantic relationships but friendships too) in order to concentrate on music. They opted to not see their friends for long periods of time to have time for music. They knew they hurt a lot of people but the success they experienced, they hope, will make the people they had to sacrifice realize that it was, at the very least, worth it.

"While watching Gil, who appeared on variety programs before me,
My mother was envious and asked “Why don’t you do it with him?”

Kang Gary didn't want to join Running Man. In fact, Jo PD had to stalk him for two weeks, going to LeeSsang's restaurant everyday just to convince Gary to give the show a try. Kang Gary didn't get swayed until his own mother expressed her wishes to see Kang Gary on a variety show.

"So when you close your eyes in this world, you can open your last door of happiness without any regrets"

The line is about death. It's Kang Gary saying that for as long as we live, we should pursue what makes us happy so that when we die, we will do so knowing we did all we could when we had the chance.

    Pursuit of Happiness English Translation

Waking up at 3pm, my body is heavy – I did a lot last night
Recorded for 20 hours, haven’t really eaten properly and my insides are burning but
It’s okay, the track turned out well – I poured out my passion into this tiny space
Soon it will bring me fame and money, as it always has

So I can’t rest, not a day, not a minute – for a great song to be produced,
Even if my body wastes away, I don’t care, even if I go insane
If a good track is produced, I don’t care if I go crazy
The legend of this era, getting recognized by everyone, the “Big Brother” of music -
These words are not me but I scrunch up and write lyrics all night
I open my own door of happiness

On my pursuit of happiness, I flew for a long time
So all the things I gave up finds some smile
On my pursuit of happiness, I endured for a long time
So that someday, everything will shine

Everything ends up where it began (nothingness)
Even if things end up painful (someday)

While watching Gil, who appeared on variety programs before me,
My mother was envious and asked “Why don’t you do it with him?”
I still remember her eyes, filled with concern that she might hurt my feelings
I’m over thirty years old but in front of my mother, I’m still a child
Maybe that was the biggest reason why I chose to do variety shows
Now my heart is at rest, people tell me how much I’ve grown
Yes, some people may bash me but my parents are happy, that’s all that matters
What more do I need? I’m always an island outside my house
I won’t forget the pride of my parents and engrave it in my heart
Whenever I go home, I see the shoes I bought them are still new
Please stop saving them up and just wear them, open the door of happiness

On my pursuit of happiness, I flew for a long time
So all the things I gave up finds some smile
On my pursuit of happiness, I endured for a long time
So that someday, everything will shine

Everything ends up where it began (nothingness)
Even if things end up painful (someday)

In this marathon called life, our paths might be different and even if we live with emptiness
We should live trying to fill it up and though there’s a lof of hardships,
Know he taste of sacrifices and take one more step
“Why is my life like this?” Those words are just excuses
Don’t give up so easily on this game called life
So when you close your eyes in this world, you can open your last door of happiness without any regrets

On my pursuit of happiness, I flew for a long time
So all the things I gave up finds some smile
On my pursuit of happiness, I endured for a long time
So that someday, everything will shine
